BLOOMINGLABS

OVERVIEW

Bloominglabs is a place where people come to learn, share, and most importantly, create.  As mentioned above, it is a Maker/Hackerspace where anyone from the community can participate.

Within the space, there are enormous variety of tools, resources, and wonderful people to help you create whatever type of project you are interested in developing.

There is a monthly membership fee, if you would like to use the tools and resources available, but they also have public meetings every Wednesday night where you can come and explore for free.

For this particular workshop, students were learning how to use and program an Arduino computer chip over the course of 4 hours (split between two nights).  Steve Charlesworth and Janett Tillotson were the workshop faciliators and led students of all ages through a series of slides and hands-on demonstrations.  By the end, the students had gained a foundational understanding of how the Arduino chip worked, and what sorts of projects they could create in the future.

This website is designed to examine the instructional aspects of this workshop.  Below, and on this site's other pages, you will find a more in-depth analysis and critique of the workshop.

Steve has been interested in programming since age 12 and has spent a great deal of his time working with and learning from others in the field.

In his own words, "the Maker/DIY movement is a much needed alternative to the increasing trend toward a passive, consumer mentality. Teaching these workshops will, I hope, inspire people to flex their creative muscles and become producers and not just consumers, even if the things they produce are just for their own fun and enjoyment."

Janett is a member of Bloominglabs and has been teaching both basic and advanced workshops on a variety of subjects for the past several years.  During this workshop, Jenett primarily acted in a support role, helping the students who were having difficulty during the hands-on learning activities.
